"The Fathead Session" - New Jonathan Stout Quartet Digital EP - OUT NOW

Recorded live in my living room using just a pair of Cascade "Fathead" ribbon microphones, this EP started out as a cancelled Campus Five gig. I found myself with musicians booked, and no venue to play, so we took the opportunity to try to record something. But we were also out of time to book a studio somewhere....

I'd been inspired by my buddy Tim Ferguson (@thefoxtooth on Instagram), who uses ribbon mics to record at home, so Josh brought over his pair of ribbon mics, and we just set up in my living room.

All of the original Swing-Era music that inspires my work was recorded with a ribbon mic or three, and in studios that weren't nearly as acoustically treated as they would become later on. Thus, a pair of ribbons in my living room wasn't exactly as crazy as it might seem.

I hope you enjoy this snapshot of one experimental evening.
